  • Really funny and insightful commentary as always! Love listening to you guys while playing the extra content in Dragon Quest 9.

Level-5 definitely comes across as the Squaresoft of the ’90s. Like you guys I haven’t been a huge fan of theirs but lately with their work on Layton and the Dragon Quest series, I’m starting to really look forward to their 3DS stuff. As for Level-5 failures, wasn’t White Knight Chronicles kinda bad?

I’m actually a little torn about Fantasy Life moving to 3DS because the DS version had such awesome 2D artwork, but after seeing the trailer it looks fantastic. Although Time Travelers looks technically very nice, I had bigger ideas for it then a school girl as the main character :/

Anyway, as for Dengeki Wii & DS magazine ending — hilarious poll by the way — don’t you think Dengeki is just restructuring for the eventual 3DS mag?

While I was living in Japan back in ’05, my friend and I were also wondering why so many Japanese women had eye patches. His theory (which makes sense to me) involves plastic surgery. As you probably know already, the Japanese language has the terms hitoe and futae; the former describes “single eyelids” that many Japanese people have while the latter describes the “double eyelids” that look more Western. Many Asian women think that larger , Western-style eyes are more desirable (take Ayumi Hamasaki as an example), so they get cosmetic surgery done on their eyes (similar to the popularity of breast enhancements in America). Obviously, if the doctor does the surgery on both eyes at the same time, the patient would be blind until his or her eyes have healed, so he or she gets one eye done at a time. I’m not sure why this has become an anime/video game trope, though. Perhaps people fantasize about things that they see every day? Anyway, that seems to be the most logical explanation to me.

Congrats on making 10 episodes and I look forward to dozens more!

Yeah, Lv5 is big shit right now. I think THE Lv5 now is even bigger than Square back in the 90s considering the amount of titles they churn out each year. They are surely more ambitious.
One thing I like about Lv5 is that their games focus on gameplay among other things (their graphic engines ain’t half bad either) so even if the stories are bland as hell I can still enjoy their RPGs as normal action games. And I find their Layton puzzle games to be repetitive, sadly.

Best wishes for Bandai Namco though, because in that mess still lies Banpresto SR Team, one of my favorite gaming developers. I hope one day Banpresto can leave Bamco and become independent again.

Regarding your questioning of direct download retail games being region specific:
Direct download retail games are region locked. There are some demos of games in the Japanese Marketplace that are also region locked.

And while you can use a foreign based credit card to purchase items on a Japanese account, you must buy points from the region you wish to use them in. MS points bought in the US won’t work on a Japanese account.

Regarding this, is there any means to apply pressure on Microsoft to release an update to make the Xbox 360 skip region checks on games? Maybe a synced response to someone like Major Nelson showing this a feature that gamers want?

  • I am with you folks on the choice of the Rockman DASH female lead. Her resemblance to T. Hawk was probably what interested me. I want her doing Condor Dives and Mexican Typhoons!

Also, thank you for mentioning Solatorobo. I have been ogling trailers and screenshots of the game and pondering a purchase. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

As for the show’s length, you guys would be best served by doing more frequent podcasts. The more podcasts you do, the less news and Twitter information you need to glean. Just my thought on the matter.

Great job as always and I look forward to the next one.

  • Takuhi

Holy crap, Godaigamer! You just blew my mind in a million pieces! That’s totally it!

Gotta remember to discuss this on the next ‘cast!

PS – Thanks for the clarification Eelcire. I wish there was a way to make MS get over that… Sadly, the winds are blowing in the wrong direction for region locking. With the yen skyrocketing I bet every future Japanese platform is going to be region locked to keep out cheap asian imports. :(

  • I loved the comments at the end of this stage about fighting game reviews by Nick and Shidoshi. They indeed are trash 99% of the time because those people reviewing them clearly do not understand the game they are playing. I’ve been saying that myself for quite awhile now and I’m glad to hear others see it too!

  • Another outstanding podcast, now the sad part, the long wait until the next one :(

  • Nyeeh

Loved the podcast. One thing I’d love you to do with the shownotes is include a basic timetable of where each section begins/ends. I love the long length but this would make things much easier for people to find specific topics on subsequent listenings. Here’s an example of what i mean:

    0:00:00-0:24:00 = Introduction
    0:24:01-1:19:34 = News
    1:19:35-1:47:19 = Mutterwatch
    1:47:20-2:32:01 = Coming Next

Other than that one minor complaint, Keep up the good work and I hope to hear Stage 11 soon.

Mamoru-kun wa Norowarete Shimatta announced for PS3, is that the game you guys are talking about on the podcast? I guess if you have a ps3 you now have a new option to play it. Maybe one of your guys can explain what the game is like or do a mini review for those who are interested.
