  • This is better than an all-peanut box of Cracker Jack!

Nick must be doing something wrong. I moved to Iwaki-shi 3 months ago and my Japanese is piss poor, but hardly anybody even seems to notice me and interactions with service people have always been cordial if not friendly.

  • I personally enjoy the segments discussing japan such “japan is fucked watch” and the one about crazy japanese games the most.

  • I was just listening to WAHP#23 and when I heard the name ‘Phil Fish’ come up, I had to pause and post this comment. I’ve heard about this GDC incident, but until now, I wasn’t aware of who said the actual words, and quite frankly, I’m not surprised.

In short, Phil Fish is a dick. People call his irresponsible, juvenile comment “honest and blunt”. It wasn’t. He’s just an egomaniac who should be put in his place, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Independent game development has grown a lot in the last decade, and has by now become a subculture in its own right. Unfortunately, this particular subculture is often plagued by notorious snobbery and a general ‘fuck you’ attitude. Why? Because it’s cool nowadays. Being crass is the new being polite. Especially when there’s no one around to punch your thick-rimmed glasses inside your skull.

I was genuinely interested in Fez. Once. A long time ago. With time, it became this hype-filled balloon which I no longer care about. Fish’s fuzzy persona didn’t help, either. I remember the first and only time I posted a comment on the Polytron website, asking why they used smooth gradients for backgrounds, instead of going all-pixel and dithering. This applied to the effects as well. I never got a reply, but seconds later I saw Fish tweet something along the lines of “OH MY FUCKING GOD … Did you see that last question???!?”. The tweet was directed to a fellow independent developer, who promptly replied with “I know, RIGHT!? I shot coffee out my nose!”. It was probably right then and there that I was done with Fez, Polytron and anything they’re involved in. Not that anyone gives two craps, but I won’t be paying for their games, that’s for sure. Voting with my wallet is the next best thing to punching those glasses in.

P.S. – I’m not a violent person and I don’t get worked up over ‘internet stuff’ easily, but every once in a while something will rub you the wrong way. This was one of those times and Phil Fish is one of those people. You can’t teach internet kids the respect they were never taught at home, unfortunately. Let this be the only comment of mine on that whole situation.

  • Monsieur Eek!

Love the show. About the indie hipster doofus thing, it seems to me that Phil Fish pretty neatly falls into that category, but I don’t think it’s a fair description of Jonathan Blow, who not only has actually made games, but is also a very substantive critic of them even if what he says is sometimes divisive. Just wanted to say that since it sounded like Shidoshi came by his impressions second or third hand.

Regarding the format of the show, it feels like it kind of drags when you guys are going down the list of upcoming releases, most of which you don’t seem to be interested in one way or another. My suggestion is that you just go with what you really want to talk about from week to week, and don’t feel obligated to address every single thing. Guests are cool, too, and might keep you guys on your toes and from dipping into a bit of lethargy in the second half. Also, it seems like it’d be hard to maintain momentum for a Skype conversation for three or four hours, so, unless you add other segments, it might just be too long.

  • Any word on Dark Souls DLC? Or was that just an unsubstantiated rumor.

  • Colin

So yeah, just re-listening to this awesomeness. God DAMN I agree with ‘Dosh so much about the Grandia style games. I can’t stand that sort of little kid on an adventure crap. I so very much more identify (-fied, I guess) with the persona highscool/teen years, which is probably a sign those years were slightly more odd than most peoples’.

But yeah, for sure, way more engaging than the pedestrian Grandia fare.
