A Generic Video Game Podcast About Retro Anime
A perhaps-ly named conversation about video games between Anthony Ernst and Mollie L Patterson.
//Episode 045
//Show Note: We talk about Sony’s closures of three of its digital stores—which, at this point, aren’t happening after all. Still, we figured we might as well keep the conversation instead of just dumping it. Beyond that, we also talk about some great retro anime coming back, the failure of the Vita, game values, listener letters, and more!

Yup, Lost Odyssey was great, and I want to play Sakaguchi’s new game, but definitely not on mobile…
To clarify, I loved Death Stranding and Bloodstained, but my question is more about presence as opposed to talent. I know these folks have talent, but to what extent are they wielding the influence needed to let it flourish? Is there any room for the auteur to maneuver in the modern gaming industry anymore?
Maybe, in a roundabout way, my subconscious is asking these questions to throw up blinders and projections…that is to say “Of COURSE Balan was substandard; Naka-san just wasn’t given a free hand! If he HAD been allowed to do his own thing, it would have knocked it out of the park!”
Etc, etc, etc.
Has the age of the auteur passed us by? Are games now always going to represent a more homogenized vision of the studio proper?
Hard to say, in my mind.
Thank you very much for answering my letter! Take care!
