A Generic Video Game Podcast About Sega Consoles
A perhaps-ly named conversation about video games between Anthony Ernst and shidoshi.
//Episode 003
//Show Note: In addition to talking about Sega consoles, we chat mooks and other Japanese terms, the plague of moe, The Evil Within, Bayonetta 2, Resident Evil 4, and more.

Slowly but surely making my way through this episode. I can’t fault you guys for forgetting about the Atari 7800 and its 2600 backward compatibility…but I can’t say it didn’t make me a little sad. I’m at the part where Anthony blames the 32X for Sega’s downfall. I’d say it goes back to the Sega CD. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my Sega CD (and all my Sega consoles), but Sega just spread itself too thin development wise (Genesis, Sega CD, and Game Gear platforms all needing content), and too many games were thrown on the Sega CD with little to no upgrades beyond music. It disappointed a lot of their customer base. 32X and Saturn just added speed to the ball that the Sega CD got rolling.

Nanashi no Game was actually being tested in a focus group for the U.S. market. The group panned the game and so S-E killed any effort to bring it over after that.

King of Fighters ’95 came with a ROM cart that was specific to and could only be used with KoF ’95. There was an Ultraman game that also needed a specific ROM cart. After that, the universal RAM carts were released.

Generic Video Game Podcast “corrections” list – SEGA episode:
@SSJName: Thanks for taking the time for various clarifications (including the A7800 reminder on BC). There is a SEGA-buff who I know, and believe me, he was quick to point out all my inaccuracies from this episode; such as (and not limited to):
* KOF ’95 on Saturn did indeed use a specific ROM cart. What confused me (and this is not an excuse) was that I have the “Best Collection” set on SS which also has KOF ’96 and KOF ’97. I had to go back and research the matter, and, it seems that ’96 and ’97 didn’t require an expansion cart, yet if one had the “RAM” cart, it could take advantage of it. KOF ’95 had that specialized ROM cart as mentioned.
* I remembered Space Harrier on Sega Master System as being the first 4mb (megabit) cart, yet, I’m being told it was the first 2mb.
* I see your point in correlation to SEGA’s downfall and don’t disagree. I felt 32x was a tipping point for the matter.
* One of the titles Shidoshi and I were trying to come up with was “Warsong” at one point in the episode.
Once again, T/Y for listening, I hope to keep improving on future episodes and bringing more enjoyment to listeners. #WelcomeToTheNextLevel

I’m 99.9% sure KoF ’96 & ’97 did require the 1 meg ram cart to work.
But no worries buddy, we all make mistakes when trying to come up with stuff on the spot. I got called out a couple weeks ago for attributing Zombies Ate My Neighbors to Konami. Of course I knew Lucasarts developed the game, but in the moment it completely slipped my mind.
I’ve really grown to like the podcast, and I appreciate the professionalism when it comes to conversation. I like being able to play it in the background in my store and not having to run to pause it if a customer comes in for fear of random cursing. Keep up the good work guys!

So you guys don’t seem very knowledgable about current Sega, even tough you are claiming to be a Japanese podcast and play Japanese games.
Just take a look through Sega.jp and take a look at their catalouge.

Neither Anthony nor I have ever claimed that GVGP is a “Japanese podcast”βthat’s WAHP. GVGP is a podcast about whatever gaming stuff we want to talk about, but it usually end up having a slant more toward what games/consoles have been released in the Western market.
As well, this episode was about Sega’s console history (as stated in the title), not their game history, which I’m pretty sure we also directly mentioned on the show. So, going into what games Sega of Japan is currently releasing had no relevance to the topic.
I also do very little game importing, instead focusing of what Japanese games get released in North America. On WAHP, talk of playing import-only titles has usually been left to either Nick or Casey.
